Ecco Press (Publisher)
Ecco (formerly Ecco Press) is a highly respected, author-centric publishing imprint based in New York City. Currently operating as a premier literary division of HarperCollins Publishers, Ecco is celebrated for publishing an eclectic, diverse, and forward-thinking list of books. By uniquely blending the vast commercial resources of a major global publishing house with the dedicated, bespoke ethos of an independent press, Ecco has forged a fifty-year legacy of championing exceptional voices in literary fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and culinary arts.
Origins and AntaeusThe history of Ecco Press is deeply intertwined with the international literary scene of the early 1970s. The company was founded in 1971 by poet and editor Daniel Halpern, with essential financial backing from philanthropist Drue Heinz. The press was essentially born out of Antaeus, a highly influential literary magazine that Halpern had co-founded a year prior in Tangier, Morocco, alongside the renowned author Paul Bowles.
Initially operating as an independent small-trade press, Ecco’s early mission was twofold: to publish distinguished new works of international poetry and fiction, and to reissue neglected literary classics in accessible paperback editions. During its foundational years, the press built an impressive catalog that prioritized artistic integrity over mass-market trends, releasing works by celebrated figures like Paul Bowles, early novels by Cormac McCarthy, and poetry by future Nobel laureate Czesław Miłosz.
Growth and the HarperCollins AcquisitionFor nearly three decades, Ecco Press fiercely maintained its independence. In 1991, Drue Heinz retired and transferred full ownership of the press to Halpern, who accelerated the company's growth while maintaining its rigorous literary standards. However, as the publishing industry rapidly consolidated in the late 1990s, Halpern recognized the need for greater distribution power to support his growing roster of authors.
In 1999, Ecco Press was acquired by HarperCollins. Rather than being absorbed and diluted, Ecco was preserved as a distinct imprint, with Halpern remaining at the helm as president and publisher. This strategic acquisition provided the imprint with the robust marketing and distribution infrastructure necessary to compete on a global scale, all while protecting its fiercely independent editorial identity.
Expanding the CatalogUnder the HarperCollins umbrella, Ecco dramatically expanded its reach, achieving massive commercial and critical success. The imprint developed a powerful reputation for publishing top-tier literary fiction, science and nature writing, biographies, and memoirs. It is perhaps best known to the general public for publishing Patti Smith’s National Book Award-winning memoir, Just Kids.
Furthermore, Ecco became a powerhouse in the culinary publishing world. The imprint published the paperback edition of Anthony Bourdain’s breakout hit Kitchen Confidential and eventually gave Bourdain his own curated publishing line, dedicated to acquiring books with strong, authentic culinary voices. Novelist Dennis Lehane also curated an eponymous line for the imprint, focusing on literary fiction with a dark, urban edge.
A Legacy of ExcellenceToday, Ecco continues to be a destination for some of the world's most acclaimed writers, boasting a roster that includes Nobel laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, and National Book Award recipients. Home to literary heavyweights such as Margaret Atwood, Joyce Carol Oates, Richard Ford, and Amy Tan, the imprint remains dedicated to providing authors the creative space they need to write their best work. Over fifty years after its inception, Ecco stands as a testament to the enduring value of an independent literary spirit thriving within the modern publishing landscape.
